What Is a Convergence?
A Convergence is a set of investigations that all trace back to one underlying question — where several major forces intersect closely enough that they can't honestly be investigated apart. Each investigation inside a Convergence stands on its own evidence, but reading them in order tells a larger story that no single piece tells alone.
Why This Convergence Exists
Artificial intelligence is the strongest emerging force currently reshaping work, capital, and infrastructure — not because Project Emergent is an AI publication, but because the evidence pointed here first. This Convergence exists to follow that one force all the way through: from population-scale adoption, through layoffs and hiring, to the physical concrete and electricity it depends on.
The Central Question
Is generative AI a genuine general-purpose technology reorganizing the economy — and if it is, what happens to the people, capital, and physical infrastructure underneath it as that reorganization plays out?
Why This Matters
Every past general-purpose technology — the steam engine, electricity, the semiconductor — rearranged the economy around itself over decades, not months. If AI belongs in that category, the changes documented in this Convergence (in hiring, in new occupations, in the largest construction program in modern history) are early evidence of a multi-decade transition, not a passing trend. Getting the diagnosis right matters for anyone whose career, company, or community sits anywhere near it.

The Age of AI is measurable — in adoption, in workforces, in concrete, and finally in gigawatts. Six investigations answered piece by piece: a population-scale adoption event; a workforce reshaping itself from the entry level up; a hiring system re-pricing what it trusts; new work already visible in real hiring decisions; a construction program large enough to show up in the national accounts; and a demand shock arriving at the one system nobody can simply airfreight in — the power grid.
What isn't yet settled is what kind of technology this becomes: transformation on history's usual multi-decade schedule, a bounded tool, or something that compounds faster than any predecessor. That verdict is still open, and the signals to watch it are listed on each investigation above.
